Qui Tutto Bene - Italians in New Zealand

The Waikato Museum is hosting the above exhibition from 23 November until the end of May 2008. As part of the event, and adding a local flavour, 2 vehicles owned by Club members have been added to the display that came here after 30 months at Te Papa. There has also events happening throughout the time the exhibition is in town, and February 5th is Mardi Gras day. We hope to be able to involve the club, and we would really appreciate anyone with a nice car (from 500 through to Ferrari 612 Scaglietti) being available that day. We don’t have any specific event in mind yet, but there will be lots of Italians and people with Italian heritage about.

Club Provides Support to Blair Thomson’s Bid For Schedule PR Glory

During the year the Committee of the Club have spent some time looking at ways we can continue our support for young or new people in motorsport. Through contacts, and with a bit of effort we have negotiated some funds from a Trust in Dunedin as a first effort. The Committee has resolved that when we are able to source these funds we will apply approximately 50% of the net funds to a “support fund” within the Club. The first recipient of a benefit from this is Blair. We wanted to test the system, he had a real need for his campaign, and he had to go through a process that most 19 year olds would find a bit daunting. However, with a bit of coaching before his submission he gave us good reason to provide the support.
But it isn’t a hand out! The Club now owns a HANS device, and a MotorSport NZ transponder which Blair will return at the end of the season. As well, he will keep us informed of progress, and will give us a run down at the AGM of the preparation and realities of running in the big time. Attached is his letter of thanks. So, keep an eye out for the real yellow (as opposed to the Suzuki puke yellow) Punto HGT Abarth.

Local Date Setting Meeting Maps Dates for 2008

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with a number of Clubs based in or near the Waikato in an attempt (successful) to put together a calendar of dates that minimised clashes of similar events. This has some real advantages for everyone. For one thing, decisions on which event you want to go to should be easier, there shouldn’t be 2 on the same day of the same time. Secondly, if you love tarmac only, you can see what is available. If you want to try some gravel, then there are local clubs organising those types of events also.

Club Member Racing at Tier One Level.

In what is a first for many years, a Fiat is racing at the top level of New Zealand’s Summer Series Racing. Blair Thomson is racing a Punto HGT Abarth prepared by Maurice and he in the Production Racing Series. Blair has set himself some big targets, being in a class that allows vehicles with close to 200bhp more than the Fiat. At his 1st outing Blair acquitted himself exremely well, beating home a buzzing hoard of Wintec prepared Suzuki Swift Sports, and a Mazda RX8. I’m sure everyone in the Club will wish the team well for the season. There are of course sponsorship opportunities.
Read the attached newletter for Blair’s perspective.
